How does your media player represent particular social groups?
In our radio station ‘radio fresh’ we include a jingle which is very catchy and I believe it has quite a urban vibe to it. I think that this represents a lively & possibly young adult social group. Also I think that the name of our radio station ‘ Radio Fresh’ relates also to the young adults social group as well.
I think that the content of our radio that we cover applies to a big majority of radio listeners in general. We have covered News, weather, Traffic & other aspects which most radio listeners want when it comes to the needs of radio content.
I think that the our radio station contains elements of humour which applies to quite a widespread amount of listeners as a lot of people enjoy comedy to a certain extent. The way which we have done this is we have included various sound effects which help to create humour. For example we included a ‘car horn’ sound effect in between a transaction from sports to traffic. We believe that this contains humour but it is also very appropriate as well.
All of these different social groups in which our radio station applies to all adds up and it gives our radio station quite a large group of potential listeners.
Who would be the audience for you media product?
I think that there is no specific audience for our radio station ’Radio Fresh’. I believe that there is a mix in audience for our media product. I think that the Name of our radio station and the jingles which we include is most suited to young adults. We also cover the news including some very serious headlines this applies to most adults.
Also the radio covers weather and traffic. This applies to the audience which are listening to the radio on the move or in their cars. This is a very big amount of people because many people listen to the radio in their cars or on the go. Also people that are listening to the radio at home are likely to be interested as well.
The audience for our media product is quite large and mixed.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media product?
In our media product we have used a jingle which come up every so often when we are changing subject in the radio station. The jingle that we use is similar to what real radio stations use. For example the radio station Heart FM use a jingle – ‘This is heart’ which goes along to tune the ends. This is similar to our Jingle.
Our radio station ‘Radio Fresh’ covers various categories such as Traffic, weather, new & sport. This is similar to most real radio stations because they often cover these subjects. One of the aspects that our media product does not have is allowing people to choose something that they want in the radio station. For example some radio station let people phone up to request a song to be played. That is one of the real media product sections which we do not cover.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I think that I learnt a lot from the preliminary task from the progression to the full product. In the preliminary task I learnt how to use the software which was a huge boost for when we had to do the full product because we could get to work straight away without having any technical issues.
We were able to listen to some of the Jingles and see what other useful sound effects were on the software. We were able to get used to the microphone which we used to record are voices for the radio. We were able to understand how to edit our product on the Garage band software.
Overall I think that the preliminary task was a great way to help kicks start our progress for the final product. It gave us a good amount of experience and I am pleased with how it helped us as a group.
I think that I learnt a lot from the preliminary task from the progression to the full product. In the preliminary task I learnt how to use the software which was a huge boost for when we had to do the full product because we could get to work straight away without having any technical issues.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt how to use the Software Garage band to quite a high standard. Also I have learnt how different radio stations use techniques for effect in their radio stations. I understand how jingles or sound effects can be used to create different vibes or moods for the media product. I realise that jingles and sound effects are vital in radio stations.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I think that our Media Product ‘Radio Fresh’ is quite similar to the way that Eagle Radio layout there radio station. When we were doing analysis I discovered that they included the usual new stories but then they included a humorous story as well. We included some serious stories in our news for our Media project, but just like Eagle radio we included some humorous stories. For example we included a story about a specialist being able to understand what animal are thinking. This may be seen as being quite humorous by some people. I consider are radio station as being quite similar as eagle radio. We also use jingles quite often like them as well.
How did you attract/ address your audience?
The way in which we have attracted the audience’s attention is by including a quite loud and lively jingle. This is attracting people from mainly the younger generation because of the sound of the jingle and some of the music we have used for the sound effects.
We mention that the news is coming up shortly in our radio station and I believe that this attracts the attention of the older generation. This is because a lot of the middle age and older generation are often interested in knowing what is going on in the latest news updates.

Script for radio Fresh
(Song fades into Jingle)(Jingle)
Alex: This is Radio Fresh
Mike: This is Radio, Fresh
Pat: This, is, Radio, Fresh
(News Jingle)
Mike: Record breaking ice in London causing serious injuries all over the city, countless ambulance calls have been made during this weather crisis, but obviously the roads are too dangerous for emergency services to be running. The government is trying to come up with solutions on how to solve this but due to the shortage of grit not much is being done to prevent this, here are what some Londoners have to say.
Londoner: “It’s just amazing how many people fall over in London recently”
Londoner: “I just wish that something could be done to prevent this ice”
Londoner: “I fell over five times walking to work today….unbelievable”
Londoner: “England just can’t cope with this weather; our whole city has come to a standstill”
Pat: If you thought Dr. Dolittle was just Fiction, you’re wrong! A scientist in Reading has recently discovered a way to translate the brainwaves of an animal into the human language. Mike Jenkins a 52 year old animal researcher from Whitley goes to Buckingham palace this afternoon to receive his OBE for animal studies. He was quoted saying “for many years now I’ve been looking into what animals are trying to say, now we finally know how to treat pets such as cats and dogs in certain situations and learn to train them correctly” Thousands of animal lovers will be crowding round Buckingham palace to congratulate Dr.Jenkings on his recent work.

Mike: And now onto the main headline news in Berkshire.
Pat: On the 22nd of February in Little Sandhurst, 17 year old Steven Ball was found dead by an early morning dog walker at the cold hour of 4:00 am. It was revealed that the student at Sandhurst school and part time sales-assistant at the Co-operative was stabbed several times whilst walking home from a late night shift. Steven Bell was found with no mobile phone or money, the contents of his wallet was scattered around the body with only membership cards and photos, all the valuables had been taken either before or after the attack. Later in the day Steven's parents were called to the scene to confirm his identity. P.C. John Michael's was called to the scene to start the investigation.
Alex (VP): This obviously is a traumatic time for family, friends and also villagers in the local area. It occurred at the early hours of this morning, but if anyone has any information about the attack, please report to the Thames Valley Police service immediately, your accounts matter.
Mike: Pandemonium at sorting offices all over Berkshire these past couple days due to the Royal Mail going on strike. Due to a series of strikes since November, people all over the Berkshire have been missing out on vital letters and bills, causing problems all over the county. Manager of Bracknell sorting office, Steven Parker was interviewed this week ad was quoted saying ‘until people respect what we do, we don’t see why we can’t have our say back, over years we have been given the relatively unfair wages for one of the most demanding jobs, post has been a common feature to our lifestyle for decades.’ It seems this quote was rather true, and struck a few chords as members of the public speak out about how this strike has affected them
Girl VP: I’m a single mother living in Whitley with 3 kids, with the father gone and me out of my job we rely on the benefits the council give us at the moment, because of the strike we haven’t received it for 2 months! I can barely even afford break and milk!
Mike: The council and the Government are looking into ways to resolve these issues and Royal Mail should be back to normal in the next few days.
(Weather Jingle)Alex: Weather for the weekend, think it’s time to bring out those layers! Frost is going to be taking Britain over, with it already in London its only a matter of time before it reaches Berkshire, also bring out the scarves because prevailing south winds will be blisteringly cold. Grit would be advised for your paths and driveways because these slippery conditions are going to treacherous towards the evening, so take it easy on the roads, wrap up warn and keep drinking those hot chocolates!

Radio Fresh Ideas - Me, Alex and mike.
The main part and spine of a Radio Station is obviously the presenter; nobody wants to be listening to the radio having to listen to a boring presenter. Our main presenter will be a male with an upbeat, happy voice and also he must be interesting to listen to. He should emphasise certain words when necessary to make it seem intriguing, such as little facts he could emphasise how many number 1s a singer has for example. But this doesn’t mean we should only have 1 presenter only, we can have another presenter if necessary who is female to make it more mixed gender and make sure there would be a bigger range of listeners, women could feel they relate more to the female and the men could relate more to the male.
For a jingle a techno sound will be played and then a male voice will say ’99.9 Radio Fresh’ this will be edited to make it seem slightly remixed and then a sound effect that sounds like smashed glass will play, this will be slightly loud to grasp the listeners attention but not seem too in your face and enthusiastic. The mains voice will be deep and exciting to make it seem catchy and modern.
For the news and weather, a woman will be presenting who seems upbeat and makes the news sound interesting, fast music with a good beat will be playing quietly playing in the background to attract attention of the audience so they know the news has come on, a jingle will be played to start it off that says ‘the news’ with the sound effects to introduce the different section. Vox pops will be used to make news stories seem more interesting so people’s opinions on the news are bought into it so you get different views from listeners and people involved in the stories.
Order of show:
A song will be played at the beginning of the clip, which quietly fades out at the end to show it’s a radio station and then merges into the loud attention grabbing jingle to finish the transition.
Then we speak about the song that was played quickly and random short facts so listeners can be interested, then its then goes on to the news. Another jingle is played to introduce the news and then the good beat starts playing, the presenter then introduces the news, the news beat is rather repetitive and seems rather stereotypical to news shows on the radio, at the end an ending jingle plays which finishes the transition and the actual Radio Fresh jingle is played to introduce the following section.
Chosen News Stories:
· The first scientist to talk to animals gets OBE for years of research.
· Bank gets broken into by 4 youths in masks after crashing into the window in a Nissan micra.
· Woman writes off mobility scooter after high velocity spin out.
· OAP gets arrested after selling back alley fireworks and narcotics to underage teens.
· Man fall in lake after saving his wife…a swan
· Jack Poston has long term injury on wrist and out of pool season due to his hand stuck in pocket of pool table.

Eagle Radio - News
Eagle radio news. 'Welcome to Eagle radio news'. This presenter says this in a welcoming voice tone and a music tone is played along to this welcoming of the Eagle news and then it finishes moments after. The effect of having this is that it makes the listeners feel welcomed to the news section and also makes them alert of what is happening without causeing confusion. 'Heavy snow Means people cannot fly at there local airports. Major problems at heathrow airport'. The effect of giving the name of the airport will alert people that its gone wrong and people from that local area will know about all of this going on so it may be busy in the area. They have a person phone in who is stuck at Heathrow Airport. ' we all undestand the weather that out of their control, we sypathise that. But what we don't sypathise is that the airport dont tell anyone what is going on or about any news of when the airport is getting back to normal or any general information. The effect of having a phone call from someone who is stuck at the airport helps people who are listening to the radio to visualize into the eyes of the people that are stuck at the airport and to understand the problems that they are facing. It is also a good way of getting listners onto the same side of 'needing to improve' Heathrow airports organisation.

Some better analysis here Pat- you are considering the effect of the techniques and conventions used. just consider why they repeat key information and how often, such as the name of the station, the jingle, the phone number/website/station freqeuncy etc...
Also, try to have a close analysis of a vox pop so you can see how they use sound effects to create a sense of location.

Eagle Radio

Jingles - Eagle radio include a jingle which they use quite regularly. They use it between mostly every song. The jingle says 'Eagle radio Berkshire' and it is sang in a female voice which goes along to a tune. The reason why this is effective is because it is a nice sounding tune which people listing will remember. This is giving Eagle radio more advertising as people will remember the name through this jingle.
Music Genre - The music that Eagle radio tend to play is Just loads of music which were major hits in the charts. And the songs vary in time. Some are recent hits and some go way back in time. This opens up a whole wide variety of listeners to the radio station. If the Genre of music is just loads of hits from all over the past decade, all sorts of ages will be satisfied with the music being played.
Presenter Voice - The voice of the presenter for Eagle radio is a very casual and jolly voice with laid back and fairly formal but casual use of language. When the presenter moves on to the news her voice has a more serious tone and also her language gets more formal. This has a good effect because she uses her tone and language to good effect and give suitable coverage of different aspects in the radio.
Interviews and phone ins - When there are phone ins for Eagle Radio the presenter has a Friendly and welcoming tone of voice. This has a good effect because it give the people that are listening to the phone call or interview a confidence or want to make them call up. It makes the amount of phone calls go up and overall makes the radio more popular. Also the presenter asks questions which are short but easy to extend on. This has good effect because it gets the most information out of the person that is being interviewed.
Weather and Traffic / Travel - Eagle radio station will let the listeners of the radio know where any traffic congestion is and if there are any serious weather issues. They will be announced almost immediately. This has great effect to the listeners because allot of people that are accessing the radio are through Cars or transport. They will be able to take the information and use it to hopefully have an upper hand on these issues.

Planning for Radio Station – Radio Fresh ideas

We are going to include weather and traffic updates in our radio station ‘Radio Fresh’. The reason why we are going to be including this is because of the questionnaire that we did, it gave positive feedback about our radio station to include in are radio station.
We are going to make Jingles and other sound effects that are suitable to include in our radio station. They will often be used when we are moving from one subject to another. Most popular radio station use jingles so we think that it would also be appropiate for our radio station 'radio fresh' to use them.
We are going to play a few different genres of music. The genres that we will be play mostly are Dubstep, RnB, Dance and Indie. For the music we will have different playlists that we will play just like other radio stations use. We will have a most popular playlist and other Dubstep playlists. Just to keep the different genres mixed up. The reason why we have chosen these genres of music is because they were the most popular genres according to the advanced questionnaire that we did. So we thought it was suitable to include these most popular genres in order to increase listeners satisfaction.
For our Radio Station ‘Radio Fresh’ we will be including a online Music podcast that people will be able access via internet through the radio fresh website. The podcast will have Music playlists that have been made by radio fresh. Also anyone will be able to buy and download the radio fresh podcasts on to their iTunes.
We will have weekly entrainment on radio fresh. We will have competitions each week which will involve listeners being able to phone up and take part. Also we will have questions that will involve people having to phone in for the answer and we will give away prizes to the winning caller.
For our radio station 'Radio Fresh' we are going to make a jingle in which we will use quite often throughout the radio station. The jingle that we going to use will say 'Radio Fresh' and it will be along to a tune. Also we may use a sound effect after the 'Radio Fresh' voice to end the jingle. The Good effect of having a jingle is that it builds up a repretation for the radio station and it is also a way of the radio station to becoming recognised from it. We will design it so it has a tune that will get stuck in your head. The jingle will be played after songs, between transitions of one subject to another and also before the interviewer talks it will often be played.

Informing and planning – Research
I made an advanced questionnaire asking people about what they would want if there was to be a new radio station. The reason why I made this advanced questionnaire is so that I can take the data into consideration for the radio station that me and my partners are going to make in the later stages of construction of our product.
In our questionnaire we found out that the most popular music genre were Dance, indie, RnB and dubstep. And the most wanted need for our radio station would be music mostly and also entrainment. The descriptions for jingles that people said they would like us to include are ‘slick, cool sounding and fresh tunes’.
We are going to use these results from the advanced questionnaires to satisfy peoples needs for our new radio station. One of my partners asked in his advance questionnaire about which names we could use for our radio station. The most popular feedback we got was for the name ‘Radio Fresh’. This will be the name that we are going to use for our radio station.
We asked in the questionnaire what tempo they most prefer for music. The overall feedback that we got to this question was a wide spread result. Each category ‘Fast and tech’, ‘Slow and chilled’, ‘upbeat and dance’ and ‘Casual and relaxed got a fairly equal amount of preferred tempos. This is great news for our new radio station because the most popular Music genres in the questionnaire were Dance, RnB, Dubstep and indie. And all of these different genres can easily be fit into the tempos that got fairly equal feedback.
In my questionnaire I asked if people were to have internet access would they be interested in a music podcast and other downloadable content. A big Majority of people said that they would be interested in a podcast. We are going to choose to mention a podcast during our radio station.
Overall I am pleased with the feedback that I got from the advance questionnaire and I will use all of this vital feedback well in order to create the radio station ‘Radio Fresh’.

BBC Radio Berkshire

Jingles - BBC Radio Berkshire includes suitable jingles that take the radio from one stage to another. For example if they are switching from the news to the weather they would include a jingle whilst the transaction is being taken place. It also helps gain a repetition for the radio. The jingle that they used for the radio at the end of the interview had a sprinkle sound then it said 'BBC Radio Berkshire' in a harmony then it faded away. This jingle would be played every so often. Its good for the radio because people will reconise the jingle after a while and it will give them a more noticable repretation. The reason why this tone is used for the jingle is like this is because the audience that it is for suits it because its a relaxed and soft sounding jingle.
Sound effects - The sound effect that is used in BBC Radio Berkshire is normally after the jingle which takes the radio from one stage to another. The sound effect is just a casual sound effect that sounds good. This suits the audience because the jingle is easy and casual which suits the age of the people that are mostly veiwing the radio station.
Genre - The genre of BBC Radio Berkshire music is mostly the 80s classic songs. This shows that the people that normally tune in to the radio station are around the age of when the music was modern and popular. The music mostly relates to 30 – 50 year old people. This is suitable for the raadio staton because the big majority of listeners are beetween 30 to 50 years old.
Weather and news - The radio station includes local up and coming weather. They will also inform break weather updates and tips if the weather is bad, like heavy snow or ice. Also the radio station include local news and traffic updates about the roads and local road works and traffic problems. 'winds getting colder over towards the weekend, frost may be in early hours of the morning'. This language that is used is fairly casual and use typical weather language for the Radion station.
Interviews and phone-ins - The phone-in calls are very casual and laidback with BBC Radio Berkshire. The questions that are ask involve quite short questions that give ‘to the point’ answers and vital information. The effect that this has is that it keeps the listeners intrested in the radio station. They dont just chat all day they keep the imformation to the point and as intresting as possible.
Presenter voice and language - The voice that the presenter has is very formal but still shows a tone of casualness. The language that the presenter uses changes in terms of what the radio category is. When the presenter is doing the news her language is very formal but when the presenter is dealing with a phone call her tone and language is mostly casual. This is important that the presenter uses suitable voice or language for what they are talking about.

Questionnaire Analysis
Question one;
Over half of the people that took our questionnaire are female. Most of the females that were asked on the questionnaire said that they listened to BBC Radio 1. The majority of the male sex said that they listened to Capital fm.
The majority of the people that took our questionnaire were 17 – 20 years old. In fact half of the people that took the questionnaire were 17 – 20 years old. The second highest age group that we asked were 13 – 16 years old. The rest of the people that we asked were all fairly equal ages from 20-40 years. The majority of the younger generation said that they access the radio whilst ‘On – the – go’. This is mostly because of the technology that the younger generation tend to have.

Question three;
80% of the people that took the questionnaire said that they listen to the radio. Only 20% said that they do not listen to the radio. The main reason why people do not listen to the radio said that they don’t because they do not have a car or a device that can access radio on the go.

Question four;
From this pie chart you can see that the majority of people listen to the radio once a day, the next biggest group of people didn’t listen to the radio at all. Then it was the people who listened to the radio more than once a day followed by people who listened once a week or more than once a week.
We asked people what radio stations they listened to, Radio 1 and capital fm were the most popular choices. BBC Radio 1, Kiss 100, Heart and Magic were the next most popular stations with Eagle, other and people who don’t listen to the radio were the least favourite.
Where do you listen to the radio? The majority of people listened to the radio in the car, followed by at home, at work, on the go and I don’t listen to radio. From this it is clear to see that people like to listen to the radio whilst moving or doing something, this could be to pass time quickly.
